Bread Pudding
An incredible bread pudding recipe from Fadia Jacobs of Douglasweg, Wynberg, might still give you a tiny flutter—it has eight ingredients—but don’t worry, they’re all pantry staples you likely already have at home! This recipe is so easy that even the most inexperienced cook can achieve amazing results.
Ingredients:
- 5 thick slices of white bread
- 1 liter of milk (fresh or powdered)
- 5 eggs
- 200 g (250 ml) white sugar
- 25 ml custard powder
- 5 ml vanilla essence
- Ground cinnamon
- Knobs of butter or margarine
Method:
- Trim the crusts off the bread and place the slices in a mixing bowl. Pour the milk over the bread and let it soak until soft.
- Mash the bread thoroughly and mix it back into the milk it soaked in.
- Add the eggs, sugar, custard powder, and vanilla essence. Beat everything together until well combined.
- Pour the mixture into a greased ovenproof dish (approximately 30 x 20 x 5 cm or 25 x 22 x 5 cm).
- Sprinkle ground cinnamon over the top and dot with knobs of butter or margarine.
- Bake in a preheated oven at 180 °C (350 °F) for about 30 minutes, or until set. (Keep in mind that it will firm up more as it cools.)
Serve warm and enjoy! Makes 8 servings.
