A classic in many South African homes, trifle counts as a guilt-free treat! There are many variations of this iconic festive dessert, but our favourite includes the original Bakers Tennis® biscuits which you can buy here at Safari Outpost.
Ingredients
· 2x 80g packet jelly powder
· 1 litre custard
· Bakers Tennis® biscuits original, 200g
· 420g canned fruit
· 290g canned dessert cream
· 120g slab of plain milk chocolate, grated
Method
1. Make the jelly according to packet instructions and refrigerate until it sets.
2. When the jelly is set, cut into cubes, and layer some of it onto the base of a deep, large, glass dish.
3. Pour a thick layer of custard over the jelly.
4. Break the Bakers Tennis® biscuits into crumbs and layer them over the custard.
5. Drain the canned fruit and layer over the biscuits.
6. Repeat steps 2 to 4 until you almost reach the top of the dish.
7. Finally, pour a thick layer of dessert cream on top and sprinkle with grated chocolate.
8. Allow to set in the fridge for a few hours.
9. Serve on its own or, for an extra treat, with vanilla ice-cream or yoghurt.
This recipe is super easy and delicious. Make it the day before to allow the flavours to “marry”.
