The classic South African braaibroodjie

Serves: 2 sandwiches
Prep Time: 5 min
Cook Time: 5–7 min

Ingredients

4 slices of white or brown bread

2–3 slices of cheddar cheese (or enough to cover the bread)

1 medium tomato, sliced

1 small onion, thinly sliced

2–3 tsp Mrs Ball’s chutney (or more, to taste)

Butter, enough to generously butter the outside of each slice

Instructions

Assemble the sandwich:

Spread chutney on the inside of each slice of bread.

Layer cheese, tomato, and onion between two slices of bread.

Generously butter the outside of the sandwich on both sides.

Grill:

Place on a hot braai, grill, or panini press.

Cook for 3–4 minutes per side, or until golden brown and the cheese has melted.

Serve:

Slice in half and serve hot, straight off the grill.

Tips for Maximum South African Authenticity

Use fresh, ripe tomatoes and good-quality cheddar.

Don’t skimp on the Mrs Balls Chutney that’s what gives it the iconic sweet-savory flavour.

For a true braai taste, cook over coals or a cast-iron griddle.
